Caudill Residence

Tucked into the Ardmore neighborhood of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Caudill Residence is a full renovation of the home's hardest-working spaces — the kitchen, pantry, primary bath, guest bath, and laundry room — reimagined by Shae Studio to feel warm, characterful, and effortless to live in. Elizabeth already had the dream location, backyard, and size. What she didn't have was a kitchen that inspired her to cook or host, a bathroom worth lingering in on a slow morning, or a laundry room that felt like part of the home rather than an afterthought above the unfinished basement. Just as importantly, she didn't yet have a space that felt like her. Over a six-month design process, Shae Studio worked to define that style and reshape every inch of these rooms — all within the existing footprint — to support the way she actually wants to live.

Elizabeth's sensibility aligns closely with Shae Studio's creative direction, which balances clean, modern millwork with texture, pattern, and precious little details. That interplay became the throughline of the project: a foundation of warm, natural millwork — crafted by Sunnyside Millwork — layered with moments of charm and character that give each room depth and personality. The result feels collected rather than decorated — a home that reveals more the longer you spend in it.

The kitchen renovation is the heart of the project: a room built for cooking and gathering rather than just passing through. A built-in banquette tucks into a bay window, drawing people in to linger over coffee or a long dinner, while the layout opens the space up for hosting. Custom white oak and soft painted cabinetry set a calm, modern base, layered with warm Fireclay Tile underfoot and aged brass Matilda Goad hardware that gives the room the kind of lived-in warmth that makes everyday meals feel worth slowing down for.

Just off the kitchen, an arched wood door opens to a walk-in pantry that keeps the cooking space clear and calm. A second arched nook tucks in a bar with an undercounter wine fridge — a small, intentional moment that makes entertaining easy and the ordinary feel a little more special.

The primary bathroom remodel was designed to make mornings somewhere she wants to be. A bright, soft vanity area handles the daily routine, while a dramatic, jewel-toned walk-in shower — wrapped in glossy Fireclay Tile and fitted with aged brass Signature Hardware fixtures — brings in the pattern and richness that define her style, turning the room into a retreat and giving her a reason to slow down and start the day on her own terms.

The guest bath welcomes visitors with the same care as the rest of the home, carrying that same layered charm through glossy tile and a deep alcove tub set within an arched surround. Comfortable and full of character, it's a place where guests feel genuinely looked after.

The laundry room was treated as a space worth designing rather than one to hide. A patterned wallpaper turns one of the home's most thankless chores into a moment of personality— proof that even the smallest, hardest-working spaces deserve to feel considered and a little bit precious.

The result is a home that reflects Elizabeth's personal style and supports the life she wants to live inside it. The project is under construction by Lynnwood Builders. All custom millwork will be made by Sunnyside Millwork, whose attention to detail and craftsmanship ties the renovation together into a cohesive, warm, and enduring home.
